During the 1950s and 60s, Sweden was a leading motocross nation. Four world champions won a total of 9 titles over 11 years – with brands such as Husqvarna, Monark, Lito and Hedlund. A unique group of riders who refined training methods, riding techniques and personalities that made them great idols for hundreds of thousands of motocross enthusiasts.

Writer and photographer Bo Ingvar Svensson
covered motocross during this era and became close friends with both the riders and several of the leading figures in the sport. This resulted in an invaluable treasure trove of pictures, articles, recorded stories and facts.

After four years of work, the book art work In The Footsteps of Motocross Legends takes you into this unique treasure trove of pictures and stories you have never read or seen before.

ROLF TIBBLIN

The ”strong bull” of motocross. Calm, controlled riding style and with an extraordinary level of fitness. A friendly attitude. The first motocross rider of the time to understand how food and drink intake affected motocross competition. Came to America in the mid-seventies and started motocross schools. WC 1962 and 1963.

BILL NILSSON

The “Cassius Clay” of motocross. Quick to respond where the irony towards his antagonists often came from. Unafraid to speak his mind about most things. Was his own mechanic. On the motocross track an unpredictable improviser with a crowd-entertaining riding style. Also a popular “crowd-puller” in his older days. European champion 1957 and world champion 1960.

TORSTEN HALLMAN

The well-educated ”academic” of motocross. Eloquent, friendly and calm in the motocross track. Stubborn and meticulous training methodology. Launched European motocross in America in the mid-sixties and became an All of Fame Legend in the country. Four time WC in 1962, -63, -66 and -67.

STEN LUNDIN

Motocross’s ”girl charmer”. Chased by the girls who got his highly valued autographs. The elegance of the motocross track, efficient riding, calm and always sitting in the saddle. Became in older days sought after by international organizers as ”attraction” for veteran motocross competitions. As a young man, he thought about getting an education in agriculture. Became world champion in 1959 and 1961.

A Perfectly Safe Investment!

I’m almost fainting with joy over the wonderful reviews I’ve received about the book! I’m especially pleased that buyers have realized the book is a unique collector’s item that increases in value, and will likely sell for a much higher price in a few years. That was exactly my intention when I planned the book—that only 300 buyers worldwide would be able to purchase a numbered and signed copy.

I truly hope my book will brighten many wonderful reading moments for you, relaxing in a comfortable armchair.
Warm regards,
Bo Ingvar Svensson

What people are saying about the book.

This is more than just a book. Swedish Motocross Legends is a museum piece. Journalist, author and photographer Bo Ingvar Svensson spent four years putting together this 650-page heavyweight, packed with never-before-seen images. His expertise in motocross touches on Sweden’s world championship titles between 1957-1967 and the fierce and fierce rivalry between Husqvarna, Monark and Lito. The book even delves into the politics of the time, explaining how rule conflicts kept legends like Jeff Smith and Sten Lundin out of the FIM Motocross of Nations. There are stories here that remind us that controversy is nothing new in this sport.

A USB stick that comes with the book offers vintage film clips and an English-translated PDF, making it accessible to non-Swedish speakers. Seeing Torsten Hallman take on Belgian icons Joel Robert and Roger De Coster is worth the price in itself. At around $650, this is a serious investment for historians and motoring experts. Swedish Motocross Legends is worth every penny – and at almost 11 pounds, it’s heavy enough to flatten your old leather motocross pants while you read it!

This is the opinion of two of the world’s most renowned motocross enthusiasts, Terry Good and Bob MacNamara.
